Kerman (Name of a region in Old Persian: Karmania) is one of the largest metropolises in Iran and the center of Kerman province is located in southeastern Iran. Its approximate population is almost 700,000 persons. Kerman is one of the five historical cities of Iran. Kerman with the total area of 13,000 hectares and because of the size and population has been classified among the metropolises in Iran. This city is a population center and the largest city in South East Iran. In terms of industrial, political, cultural and scientific issues Kerman is most important city in the South East of the country. Kerman at 1756 meters above the sea level, is the third high province in Iran.
Kerman has had different names in the past such as Bothnia, Karmania and Gavashir. Kerman’s name can be seen in the inscriptions of Darius. Kerman is an area where the saint woods were carried to the palaces of the Achaemenians. In Greek writings, the name of the city have been read Kerman and the people of Kerman are originated from the Persians.
It is highly believed that “Ker” means “Mountain” and “Man” is a suffix referring to “mountainous land“.
